A HAZAI MEZŐGAZDASÁGI VÁLLALKOZÁSOK MENEDZSMENTJE EURÓPAI ÖSSZEHASONLÍTÁSBAN AgEcon
Szekely, Csaba; Palinkas, Peter.
Az Európai Unió versenykörnyezete a mezőgazdasági vállalkozások gazdálkodásának színvonalát tekintve is megközelítően azonos feltételeket kíván meg az egyes országok gazdasági szereplőitől. Ebben a tekintetben a magyar gazdaságok – rövid, másfél évtizedes múltjuk következtében – sok szempontból hátrányosabb helyzetűek a régebbi tagállamok gazdaságaihoz, és részben az egy időben csatlakozott országok mezőgazdasági vállalkozásaihoz képest, annak ellenére, hogy a „nagyüzemi” gazdálkodás időszakában még sok helyen mintának tekintették mezőgazdasági üzemeink gazdálkodási, szervezési gyakorlatát. A tervezés, szervezés, gazdálkodás magas színvonala a múltban gyökerezett és folyamatosan megújult: több évszázadra vezethető vissza a gazdálkodással foglalkozó...

AGRIBUSINESS TRADE CREDIT -- A PARADOX AgEcon
Gustafson, Cole R..
This article utilizes the Survey of Small Business Finances to compare and contrast trade credit practices of rural small business firms. The results show that these firms borrow money and then re-lend it to others in the form of trade credit. There is a strong direct relationship between various forms of debt held by these firms and their level of accounts receivable (e.g., trade credit extended to customers). The actual level of re-lending varied among firms depending on their adoption level of computers that are used for cash management and credit services. Accounts receivable balances were also dependent on sales levels, costs of doing business, and other income. The most important source of funds for re-lending was obtained from mortgages and...

APPLICATION OF RECURSIVE PARTITIONING TO AGRICULTURAL CREDIT SCORING AgEcon
Novak, Michael P.; LaDue, Eddy L..
Recursive Partitioning Algorithm (RPA) is introduced as a technique for credit scoring analysis, which allows direct incorporation of misclassification costs. This study corroborates nonagricultural credit studies, which indicate that RPA outperforms logistic regression based on within-sample observations. However, validation based on more appropriate out-of-sample observations indicates that logistic regression is superior under some conditions. Incorporation of misclassification costs can influence the creditworthiness decision.

Biodiversity: the chasm between what we know and we need to know. Anais da ABC (AABC)
MAGNUSSON,WILLIAM E..
Abstract: In this review I focus on what we need to know to make decisions relevant to land-use planning. I discuss four questions: What information about the distribution of biodiversity is available to decision makers? What sort of information is required at a local scale? Can we use species-distribution modeling to compensate for the lack of empirical information at larger scales? Can we use surrogates based on remote sensing for all our decisions? To be effective, biodiversity information needs to be based on standardized sampling with data made available during the initial planning phases of infrastructure projects, which are now based only on engineering or social considerations and occur several decades before construction starts. The RAPELD method...

Determinants of Return on Equity in U.S. Local Farm Supply and Grain Marketing Cooperatives AgEcon
Boyd, Scott; Boland, Michael A.; Dhuyvetter, Kevin C.; Barton, David G..
Farm supply cooperatives are an important component of the retail agribusiness industry in the United States. The objective of this research is to identify financial variables that are determinants of return on equity in these cooperatives. Firm effects are important and their effect is the result of managerial decision making and director policy. The estimated coefficient on asset size was not statistically significant, suggesting that return on equity is invariant to size over this period.

Dynamics of income, wealth and capital in Norwegian farm household accounts: A state-space model AgEcon
Hoveid, Oyvind; Raknerud, A..
Feedbacks between on-farm and off-farm activities are analyzed with a state-space model over a panel of farm household accounts. We discover significant positive effects of farm capital both on farm income and on wage labor income. The latter effect is interpreted as wage labor partly paying the debt incurred by investments in farm capital. Significant positive effects on farm capital from wealth - indicating credit rationing or an immediate willingness to pay for farm investments - are also discovered. The wealth effect on farm income is also significantly positive. By and large - at least for the household for which the results are estimated, and for the model applied - Fishers separation theorem is rejected.

Farmer Cooperative Theory: Recent Developments AgEcon
Staatz, John M..
Since 1980, agricultural economists have begun to reexamine fundamental issues in the theory of agricultural cooperation. These include the basic nature of farmer cooperation; the theoretical benefits and limits of cooperative enterprise; and the implications of these for cooperative members, managers, and public policy. Analysts have extended previous models of the cooperative as a type of business firm in order to analyze the impact of large cooperatives on market performance. They have also developed new models to analyze how cooperatives attempt to serve the divergent interests of different participants, such as managers and different classes of farmers. This report describes and evaluates recent theoretical developments, outlines remaining areas of...

Finance and Cluster-Based Industrial Development in China AgEcon
Ruan, Jianqing; Zhang, Xiaobo.
The traditional literature emphasizes the causal role of finance in promoting industrial growth. China’s rapid industrialization over the past several decades, which has occurred in the absence of well-functioning financial markets, seems to defy the conventional wisdom. By studying a cashmere sweater cluster in China, this paper argues that rural industrial clustering, as a new business model, lowers the entry barriers of initial capital investment through the division of labor. Within these clusters, enterprises can often acquire trade credits from upstream or downstream firms and obtain informal financing from friends and relatives, and use these funds to mitigate constraints of working capital. These findings help explain China’s rapid...

Financial Performance of Dairy Cooperatives AgEcon
Stafford, Thomas H..
Combined balance sheets and operating statements were used to develop benchmark financial ratios for dairy marketing cooperatives. Data from 291 cooperatives were summarized for five types of dairy cooperatives, then by three types and three size combinations. Both type and size of cooperative made differences in most of the 16 financial ratios calculated as well as in the common size balance sheets and operating statements.

Financing Smallholder Agricultural Production in Kenya: An Analysis of Effective Demand for Credit AgEcon
Nyikal, Rose Adhiambo.
Financing smallholder farming has been one of the major concerns of Kenya’s development efforts. Many credit programs have evolved over the years but with dismal performance. In a study that sought to find the best way to fund smallholder agriculture, it became necessary to analyze and document smallholders’ effective demand for credit. Of particular interest was the comparison of the existing production plans and production plans under strictly profit maximization. Linear programming model was used to formalize observed plans and determine those under profit maximization. Both the activities and the values of outputs under different objectives were compared. Farm Investment Analysis was undertaken to determine the suitability of funding farm activities...

LOCAL COOPERATIVES' EVALUATION OF BUSINESS INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES AgEcon
Hine, Susan E.; Fulton, Joan R.; Loureiro, Maria L.; Vandeburg, Jennifer M.; McNamara, Kevin T..
Agricultural cooperatives have been restructuring, by way of mergers, acquisitions, joint-ventures, and strategic alliances, to increase efficiencies to remain competitive in a changing business environment. The research evaluating the reorganization of cooperatives has revealed that less than one-half of the restructured businesses are financially successful. There is the potential to significantly influence the future health of the cooperative business sector if, first, insights can be gained concerning the factors being considered by cooperative managers when making restructuring decisions and, second, extension education programs can be adapted to meet the greatest need. In this study we examine: (a) what methods of valuation cooperatives are using...

Non-Credit Services of Group-Based Financial Institutions: Implications for Smallholder Women’s Honey Income in Arid and Semi Arid Lands of Kenya AgEcon
Otieno, Peter Shimon; Nyikal, Rose Adhiambo; Mugivane, Fred Inuani.
This paper analyses the effect of non-credit services of joint liability credit institutions on smallholder women beekeepers’ honey income. The non-credit services offered to the beekeepers are mainly enterprise development services (training on marketing, business, production and subsector analysis). The study uses cross-sectional data from a survey of women beekeepers participating in group-based credit programmes; the survey was conducted in September 2005 in Makueni district of Kenya. The findings indicate that the number of enterprise development related trainings attended by women beekeepers that are offered by the group-based financial institutions positively and significantly influence honey income. The results confirm that non-credit services...

Successful organizational learning in the management of agricultural research and innovation: the Mexican produce foundations AgEcon
Ekboir, Javier M.; Dutrenit, Gabriela; Martinez V., Griselda; Vargas, Arturo Torres; Vera-Cruz, Alexandre O..
Since the 1980s, developing countries’ agriculture has become more complex and diversified. In general, the public research and extension institutions in these countries were criticized for not participating in the emergence of the most dynamic agricultural markets. In recent years, many of these institutions have struggled to adapt to the new environment but they could not overcome the hurdles posed by organizational rigidities, strict public regulations, deteriorating human capital, shrinking budgets and a model of science that hampered their integration into dynamic innovation processes. In general, developing countries applied similar agricultural research policies: separation of financing and implementation of research, reductions in direct budgetary...
